Biker Discrimination

Got my first taste of biker discrimination yesterday. Ironically, the day after I first viewed Easy Rider.

Lisa and I got turned away from a self-described ‘upscale sports bar and restaurant’ in Odessa, TX named Fast Eddie’s because we chose not to remove the so called ‘rags’ from our heads. The ‘rags’ were actually Buffs, which are a multifunctional piece of head wear available at www. buffusa.com. You may have seen them on Survivor.

What got me was not the policy but was rather the extremely poor presentation by a young waitress who didn’t appear to want to be there anyway.

Lisa was ahead of me and was the first to be told ‘Take that rag off your head’. Not, ‘hello, how are you?’ or ‘Is this your first time here?’ or ‘Excuse me, but we have a prohibition here of wearing ‘rags’ on your head’. I replied ‘excuse me’. To which the young waitress replied, ‘you have to take those things off’. I began to comply and asked her if they did not permit hats of any kind in Fast Eddie’s. She told me ‘No, hats and caps are ok. Just not those things.’

Almost instantaneously, I decided we would not be spending any money there! So we left.

We later met up with other bikers at a local hangout and found that many others have been discriminated by Fast Eddie’s as well. Just because they were bikers. Including a good friend who sells Harleys at the local dealership and stopped there one day this winter while out riding during cold weather. He had his leather riding jacket and leather gloves on and could not get anyone to offer him service while he sat at the bar (which was not crowded, according to him).

So if you have biker friends in the Odessa, TX area, steer them clear of Fast Eddie’s. As they won’t be welcome there!

That sucks. I can’t say I know about Texas, but it sounds like they’re still stuck in a time warp. I blogged this on my blog as well. Cool blog you got.
