Motorcycle vibrations damaging to hearing?

There is an interesting post over at Faster and Faster about motorcycling, vibration and hearing. You can find the post here.

We all know (or at least should by now) that subjecting our hearing to loud sounds, such as exhausts and wind noise, for extended periods of time, can cause hearing damage and loss. What many of us might not know (I didn’t know this) is that even wearing ear plugs during riding may not necessarily protect your hearing due to vibration of the cochlea. And, interestingly enough, your helmet may be an aid in transmitting the vibration to the cochlea.

At least that is the theory of a Dr. Michael Carley at the Bath University in the UK.

Dr. Carley is currently heading research on the topic and, as the Faster and Faster post points out, is in need of bikers help in completing an online survey, which you can find here. The survey is being used to relate riding patterns to hearing damage.

Interesting research, to say the least.

Quiet please: Put a lid on this… [via Faster and Faster]

About Ronn

More to follow in this space. I am just a guy who is interested in motorcycles. I currently ride an '04 HD Heritage Softail Classic (I traded in my '06 HD XL 1200 C in February 2008). I started this site because I am just arrogant enough to think that I can put together a site that appeals to a wide, cross-section of riders on several different levels. I hope you find it interesting, provocative (just really wanted to use that word :-) and fun and that you will encourage others to visit as well. Thanks!
