There is a promising new direction service out there called ‘Dial DIR-ECT-IONS’. You can find their web site here.

The skinny on the service is this. You call in from your text enabled cell phone by dialing 347-328-4667 (DIR-ECT-IONS) and give voice commands for your start and destination. Then shortly, you will receive a text message with detailed, turn-by-turn directions from your starting point to the ending point.

Pretty slick!

Although currently only available for nine metro city locations, more locations are on the way.

This could be a good substitute for those of us who don’t yet have a GPS unit or want to access Google Maps or the like.

Enjoy!

A company named d30 (dee-three-oh) has been working on a flexible material that has some armor-like characteristics upon impact. You can find the d30 website here.

Here is what the d30 website has to say about the material:

(dee-three-oh) is a specially engineered material made with intelligent molecules. They flow with you as you move but on shock lock together to absorb the impact energy.

This new technology has already been incorporated into motorcycle gloves (see Racer Gloves at www.racergloves.com) and a downhill slalom suit (see Spyder at www.spyder.com) to name a few.

One product, due out in this winter, that may be of particular interest to bikers is from a company called Sessions. They will be incorporating the d30 technology into their layering apparel. Details from the d30 website include the following:

Sessions have become the first to incorporate d3o into their range of first layers. This groundbreaking move has resulted in Sessions’ Thermatics d3o Crew and Pant being awarded the SnowPress Innovation Award 2007.

The men’s range of Thermatics first layer garments have d3o placed in the direct contact areas such as the elbows and knees to provide lightweight, flexible protection.

Thermatics d3o Crew: Wicking thermal knit; d3o protective elbow inserts; Thumbholes; Articulated body; Drop tail hem

Thermatics d3o Pant: Wicking thermal knit; d3o protective knee inserts; No side seams for reduced chaffing; Articulated body; Gusset fly with peek hole; Logo elastic waistband

Keep your eyes open for new developments with regards to the d30 technology and watch for more specific motorcycling applications to come.

And take a look at Charlie6′s post on this over at Redleg’s Rides, which you can find here.

Here’s a great way to take home a little vino after your have visited your favorite new winery on your motorcycle.

Although not specifically designed for motorcycles, you should still be able to strap one of these on your bike and get your precious cargo home.

The carriers, by WineCruzer, were actually designed with the ‘jet-set’ crowd in mind, as is evidenced by this blurb from the WineCruzer website, which you can find here.

The ingenious WineCruzer wine carrier will allow you to transport your bottles securely in an indestructible hard shell case with closed cell foam, safely maintaining placement temperature for six to eight hours, and at 30,000 feet!

Ranging in models that will hold two bottles up to a massive 24 bottle carrier with rollers, these cases will set you back $135 for the 2 carrier and $495 for the 24 carrier.

Think of it as a little insurance policy for your purchase.

Enjoy!

Covertec, known more for their high quality leather phone and pda cases, is coming out with a couple of new laptop bags that just may be of interest to motorcyclists. Especially those of us who have a tendency or need to cart around our laptops with us

The two new models, the Racer M (for medium) and Racer L (for large) are scheduled to be available for purchase soon. You can actually sign up to be notified of their availability via the Covertec Bags website which you can find here.

One of the details of these bags that leads me to believe that it would be good for the motorcyclists is the use of Visco Elastic Memory Foam (initially developped for NASA) in the laptop compartment.

I like the idea of having my laptop being jarred a little less than in a regular backpack because it is nestled in a memory foam compartment.

A couple of other features that are appealing to me include waterproof zippers as well as a ‘rain coat’ that is hidden in the bottom of the bag.

While I would never intentionally take my laptop out on the bike in raining weather, it would be nice to know that I could slip a rain coat over the backpack until I could get out of the rain. And although it is a nice feature, I would use it just until I could find shelter as I doubt it would provide that much protection in a steady downpour.

Other features of the backpacks include:

Central pocket for documents (legal size) + utility pockets

Front shell made of semi-rigid EVA

Smart pocket to carry PDA, cell phone, cards, documents & laptop accessories

2 hidden pockets

Adjustable shoulder straps featured with non slip grips

Comfort of the back panel enhanced by the high density foam

Adjustable and removable belt

Shoulder straps fixation loops

Bottom of the bag reinforced with heavy duty synthetic material

All in all, these appear to be a good backpack alternative for us bikers who are looking to cart around out laptops and other gadgets.

Enjoy!

“The motivation for the BIKER+IDâ„¢ was to quiet my wife’s fears,” says Carl Hanlon, designer of BIKER+IDâ„¢ and owner of Guilty Customs. Hanlon says that, “she was afraid that I’d end up in the hospital as a ‘John Doe’ and no one would know who to call or what allergies I had. So this was a natural solution.”

Each year, over 450,000 people are taken to hospitals unconscious and without Identification. And with the latest statistic from NHTSA showing over 88,000 motorcyclists in 2006 were injured in traffic accidents, it makes sense to have the BIKER+IDâ„¢ available for medical personnel to help save your life.

“BIKER+IDâ„¢ can prevent serious delays in medical treatment or the contacting of loved ones in case of an accident or seizure. The BIKER+IDâ„¢ isn’t just another identification bracelet either! The BIKER+IDâ„¢ is made ‘by riders for riders’, who know that accidents happen, and that accurate and easily accessible information is critical for every rider.” he said.

Guilty Customs, LLC (www.guiltycustoms.com) is a motorcycle manufacturer that is quickly establishing itself in the custom chopper industry by bringing to the discerning consumer, innovative and “rider friendly” custom motorcycles and parts that are affordable.
